HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!
Congratulations to the North Cougar Band on what was an excellent winter concert!!!
As we move into the second semester of the school year, please be advised of the following reminders.

Here is the list of piano accompanists:

Dental Braces—Please consider waiting until after our spring contests in late April to apply dental braces to your child’s teeth! Your kiddos are in THE single-most demanding and intense time of the year in preparation for the upcoming contests (Solo Contest, UIL, Auditions etc). Applying dental braces at this time will adversely affect your child’s ability to play at the same level as without the braces. Adjusting to braces takes between 4-6 weeks musically. With this in mind, please consider waiting until May. Honestly, the BEST time to get them installed is during the summer break.
Spring Concert—The North Cougar Band Spring Concert will be held on Tuesday, May 16th at Coppell High School. The performance will begin at 7pm. Please plan to attend this culmination of the school year’s hard work!
Band Banquet—The CMS North Cougar Band Banquet will be held on the evening of Wednesday, May 24th at Coppell High School. Details TBA.

6th Grade Parents
Materials for Band—We are doing GREAT with this! Your child is very consistent about bringing their instrument, band binder with pencils each day! ALL GREAT HABITS THAT WILL PAY OFF!
Beginner Band Concert--Our Beginner Band Concert is scheduled for Thursday, October 27th at 7pm in our CMSN Cafeteria. Please make plans to attend this first of many performances! The Beginner Band classes are off a great start and we look forward to showing off the hard work!
Practice Routine—At this time of year, please help your child organize their time at home. Academics, Band practice, family time, friend time and video game time must take on a balance. Please consider sitting down with your child and putting together a scheduled routine so that home-time can be productive, restful and happy for everyone!
Practice Space—Within your home, please help your child find 1) a hard surface chair (piano bench or wooden dining chair for example) and a room preferably other than their bedroom to practice. The many, many distractions within their bedrooms tend to take away for their concentration during practice. Try to get them into the most “boring” room in your home for practice. This way they are more likely to concentrate on their musical instrument and learning goals.
7th and 8th Grade Parents
Band Plays at 8th Grade Football Game—The North Cougar Band will play at the 8th grade football games on October 12th from 3:35-6:30pm. Please plan to attend the game and cheer the team and our Band on! Please see the agenda for this event below!

Concert Band students may audition upon approval of Ms. Guinn and Mr. Lindquist. Those who earn a chair after the auditions participate in the All-City band clinic and concert on November 17th. This is a VERY PRESTIGIOUS achievement that we highly encourage our North Band students to prepare for.
All City Sectionals—All-City Sectionals have begun and will continue until October 20th. Please see the All-City Sectional explanation and schedule at the bottom of this email! Students enrolled in athletics will leave their athletic practice at 3:35pm and report to their band sectional on their designated sectional day. The only time a student should miss their All-City Sectional practice is when they have an athletic game/tournament/meet. Otherwise, students who miss their All City sectional will jeopardize their seat in our Honor Winds and Symphonic Bands. Please find the All-City after School Sectional Schedule at the bottom of this email.
Saturday Master Classes—There is no Saturday Master Class this Saturday, October 8th due to the long weekend. The final Saturday All-City Audition Master Class of the year is Saturday, October 15th from 10am to 12 noon here at MS North!

Band Travel Waiver: All Band students must have a Band Travel Waiver on file prior to any off campus trips. All grades (6, 7 and 8) will be taking one or more trips off campus this year and we cannot travel without the form completed. Please click the link below, complete the information requested and submit!

Name Tags: Please affix a name tag (luggage tag) to your child’s instrument case before the first day of school. Virtually all band members play on the same make and model instruments so distinguishing personal instruments will be impossible without a name tag. Additionally, make note of your child’s instrument serial number for future ID purposes. For guidance on finding the serial number, contact your child’s private lesson teacher or visit the manufacturer website. All students will have an instrument slot to house their instrument during school. ALL instruments need to go home every day as the instrument storage spaces are not monitored 24-7 (plus ALL the kiddos need to practice)!
Private Lessons: Private Lessons have begun! Private lessons are available here at MS North for each instrument and grade. Lessons are once per week for 25 minutes. Your child’s private lesson can be scheduled before school, during Band class or after school based on your availability and the private teacher’s availability. Lessons cost $25 each. Our private lesson program is the single-most important component of our Band because of the TREMENDOUS value of one-on-one instruction. Please see the Private Lesson Contact list below and contact your child's teacher ASAP to set up lessons!!!
Band Plays at 8th Grade Football Game—The North Cougar Band will play at the 8th grade football games on September 27th from 3:35-6:30pm. Please plan to attend the game and cheer the team and our Band on! More details will be announced as we approach the date!
Coppell ISD All-City Band—The All-City Band is a Band composed of the best musicians in Coppell ISD for grades 7 and 8. All 7th and 8th grade students learn scales and two songs during August, September and part of October. Blind auditions are held on October 21st and 22nd for all 7th and 8th grade students.
Saturday Master Classes—Saturday Master Classes are held on Saturdays from 10am-12 noon at CMS North and are led by our Private Lesson Staff. Master Classes benefit all 7th and 8th grade students. The primary focus of the Master Classes is to prepare scales and the audition music for All-City Band auditions in October. Saturday Master Classes are mandatory for all Honor Winds and Symphonic Band members. Master Classes are optional for Concert Band members. Students who miss Saturday Master Classes will jeopardize their seat in our Honor Winds and Symphonic Bands.
Fall Concert--Our Annual Fall Concert is scheduled for Tuesday, October 25th at 7pm in our large gym. Our Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Honor Winds will be featured in this side-by-side-by-side concert. Please make plans to attend and enjoy our first of many concerts this year!
Athletics and Band—Mrs. Guinn and I work closely with the coaching staff and share many students! The coaches are aware of band students who will leave their athletic practice at 3:35pm on their designated day to attend Band practice. It is the students’ responsibility to (without the coaches prompting) leave athletic practice and report to Band on time the day of their sectional. Games always take precedence over Band practices. Band concerts always take precedence over Athletic practices. Band athletes have athletic practice multiple times per week outside the school day and have Band practice once per week outside of the school day.
