Sixth Grade Parents

Beginner Band Concert—Our Beginner Band Concert is scheduled for Thursday, October 30th at 7pm in our CMSN Cafeteria.  Please make plans to attend this first of many performances!  The Beginner Band classes are off a great start, and we look forward to showing off the hard work!  Please plan on limited parking as there is another large event on campus and parking will be limited.  Remember you may park on the west side of the building as well as near Denton Creek Elementary School as well.

Practice Routine—At this time of year, please help your child organize their time at home. Academics, Band practice, family time, friend time and video game time must take on a balance. Please consider sitting down with your child and putting together a scheduled routine so that home-time can be productive, restful, and happy for everyone!

Practice Space—Within your home, please help your child find 1) a hard surface chair (piano bench or wooden dining chair for example) and a room preferably other than their bedroom to practice. The many, many distractions within their bedrooms tend to take away for their concentration during practice. Try to get them into the most “boring” room in your home for practice. This way they are more likely to concentrate on their musical instrument and learning goals.

Seventh/Eighth Grade Parents

7th & 8th Grade Flutes—Our flute instrument upgrade event is on Saturday October 18th from 3:00-6:00pm.
We are GOING to Carolyn Nussbaum’s store this year, hooray!
Please use this link to sign up for your individual appointment: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040D4BADAF2BA7F85-58451859-flute#/
Remember not to wear rings or hand jewelry, bring food into the store, or drink sticky drinks during your appointment. Also, please bring your all-city music and scales to play on the flutes you try.
This event is STRONGLY suggested for all 7th & 8th grade flutes that are still playing on their beginner level flutes.
Pep Rally–Please be advised that our first Pep Rally of the year will be Tuesday, October 21st!  All 7th and 8th grade students should wear their white North Band shirt for this performance!

Football Game Performance–The band will perform at the 8th grade football games on Monday, October 20th. The performance will be here at our MS North athletic stadium. Food and drink will be provided prior to the performance. Students should wear their white North Band shirt for this performance! Students will report to the band hall at 3:45pm and will be dismissed at 7pm.

Football Game Performance Itinerary

–3:45-4:30pm Rehearsal Outside
–4:40-5:00pm Pizza and Drinks served
–5:00-5:20pm Kona Ice served
–5:45-6:40pm Performance at stadium

Coppell ISD All-City Band—The Coppell ISD All-City Band is a band composed of the best musicians in Coppell ISD for grades 7 and 8. All 7th and 8th grade students learn scales and two songs during August, September and part of October. Blind auditions are held on October 25th for all 7th and 8th grade students. Those who earn a chair after the auditions participate in the All-City band clinic and concert on November 20th. This is a VERY PRESTIGIOUS achievement that we highly encourage our North Band students to prepare for.

All City Sectionals—All City Audition preparation sectionals will be held before and/or after school Monday through Friday. The sectionals are mandatory for all Honor Winds, Symphonic Band and Concert Band students. Students who miss their All City sectional will jeopardize their seat in Honor Winds and Symphonic Bands. All-City Sectionals will begin the week of August 19th and continue until October 24th.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Lindquist

Sixth Grade Parents
Practice–Ms. Guinn and I are really HAPPY with how the school year has begun! At this time, all students should be practicing each night at home. Students are acquiring many skills that need routine practice. Practice sessions should require about 25 minutes per night at this time. Consistent practice habits will lead to a VERY successful future for your child!

Dear Cougar Band Students and Parents,

I hope you are well today!

Each month you should receive an email from the band entitled Band Notes. The emails will detail upcoming events and reminders for our band program. You will typically find the emails organized into three sections: 1) 6th, 7th, 8th Grade Parents 2) 6th Grade Parents 3) 7th and 8th Grade Parents.

Please read each email in their entirety.

I try to list new topics at the top of each section and cycle the older information down.

Please be aware of the following reminders:

Band Parent Volunteers Needed--Each year, the North Band relies on Parent Volunteers to serve at our various functions include (but not limited to) parties, concerts and contests.  This year we would like you to consider serving at one or more of our many functions. If you are or may be available to serve at a North Band function during the 2025-2026 school year, please see the directions below to become cleared as a Parent Volunteer.

We cannot have you serve in any capacity unless you have applied and been approved!

North Band Website—Please take a moment and check out the CMS North Band Website at https://coppellnorthband.weebly.com/

Private Lessons‐‐have begun! Private lessons are available here at MS North for each instrument and grade. Lessons are once per week for 25 minutes. Your child’s private lesson can be scheduled before school, during class or after school based on your availability and the private teacher’s availability. Lessons cost $26 each. Our private lesson program is the single‐most important component of our Band because of the TREMENDOUS value of one‐on‐one instruction. Please see the Private Lesson Contact list below and contact your child's teacher ASAP to set up lessons!!!

Name Tags—Please attach a name tag to your child’s band instrument case handle. We have over 50 flute and clarinet students here so you can imagine how confusing it could become!!!  Include on the name tag: Your child’s name, Coppell Middle School North, 120 Natches Trace Coppell TX 75019, (214) 496‐7177.  You can add your personal address and phone but you may elect to keep that private.

Band Binders—ALL students regardless of grade need a BLACK 1” three ring binder, pencil bag, pencils, pens and highlighters for band class beginning August 18th. Please be certain that your child’s name is clearly written on the inside of the binder.

Fund Raiser—At this time, we are working out the date and details for our fund raiser for the fall. More information will be shared as it becomes available.  We typically participate in fundraising during the month of October.

North Band Calendar—Please see the most up-to-date North Band Calendar for the 2025-2026 school year below!

Sixth Grade Parents

First Day of School—Your child should not bring their instrument or band supplies to school on the first day.  Your child will learn about our facility and procedures during the first day of school! We will let you (and your child) know when it is time to begin bringing their instrument to school on routine basis.  If your child has a private lesson during the first week of school they should bring their instrument for their lesson.

Piccolo, Oboe, Bassoon, Percussion Instrument Usage Fee--This usage fee helps defray the cost of routine maintenance as well as repairs. The $175 usage fee pays for the usage of the band instrument until May of 2026.  The Instrument Usage Fee must be paid through SchoolPay. You may access SchoolPay through the Coppell MS North webpage (https://www.coppellisd.com/o/north). Scroll down and choose the “SchoolPay” icon. We cannot issue district property (band instruments) without payment (i.e.—your child will not receive an instrument without payment).

Bari Saxophone, French horn, Euphonium, Tuba Instrument Usage Fee--Students who play these instruments will have two instruments (one for school practice and one for home practice). This usage fee helps defray the cost of routine maintenance as well as repairs. The $250 usage fee pays for the usage of the band instruments until May of 2026.

Unfitted Students—All students who have not been fitted for a band instrument have been scheduled in the Flute class at this time. We will fit students during class over the course of the first week of school.  Parents should expect communication from us concerning which instrument your child will play as well as next steps on getting an instrument arranged.  Once fitted, your child's schedule will be adjusted to align with their instrument.

Seventh/Eighth Grade Parents

First Day of School—We will play the first day of school!  Please be certain that your child has their instrument, music, tuner and microphone clip for the first day of school.  Flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet and trombone players should report to the band hall before 1st period to locate their new band storage slot and store their instrument before the school day begins.

Athletics and Band—Mrs. Guinn and I work closely with the coaching staff and share many students! The coaches are aware of band students who will miss their athletic practice on their designated day to attend band sectionals.  Athletic games always take precedence over Band practices.  Students will play in the athletic game instead of attending a band practice. Band concerts always take precedence over athletic practices. Students will miss athletic practices to attend band concerts.  Band athletes have athletic practice multiple times per week outside the school day and have band practice once per week outside of the school day.

Coppell ISD All‐City Band—The Coppell ISD All‐City Band is a band composed of the best musicians in Coppell ISD for grades 7 and 8. Seventh and eighth grade students learn scales and two songs during August, September and October. Blind auditions are held on November 1st for 7th and 8th grade students.  Those who earn a chair after the auditions participate in the All‐City band clinic and concert on November 20th. This is a VERY PRESTIGIOUS achievement that we highly encourage our North Band students to prepare for.

All City Sectionals—All City Audition preparation sectionals will be held before and/or after school Monday through Friday for woodwind and brass students.  The sectionals are mandatory for all Honor Winds, Symphonic Band.  Sectionals are optional for Concert Band students.  Students who miss their All City sectional will jeopardize their seat in Honor Winds and Symphonic Bands.  All-City Sectionals will begin the week of August 18th and continue until October 31st.  Sectionals begin at 3:45 and conclude at 5:00pm.  Please see the All-City Sectional schedule below!

The above includes LOTS of information I realize but we are trying to only send you information once per month!

Please let us know how we can help in any way!

Sincerely,

Jeremy Lindquist
Allie Guinn

Glossary of Calendar Terms

All-City
All-City is short for Coppell ISD Middle School All-City Band.  This All-City Band is literally a Band.  7th and 8th grade students throughout Coppell ISD receive, learn and audition on two songs, scales and sight reading at the October audition.  Students who place at the top of the audition roster, earn a chair in the district's All-City Band.  The All-City learning, preparation and audition process are very rich learning experiences for our learners.

Assessments
Assessments (both Start of Year and End of Year) are required by all 7th and 8th grade Woodwinds and Brass.  Students receive their music on the same day so that they have the same amount of time to prepare for the assessment.  The assessment is one of many factors we take into account when making Band placement recommendations.

Band Parent Meeting
This is a VERY important meeting where parents and directors discuss in person each aspect of our Band program.  Discussion points include:  Calendar, Monies, Private Lesson, Expectations and many more.  At least one parent per household must attend.  No students attend this meeting.

Clinic
Clinic is a fancy word for rehearsal or practice.

Contest Season
Contest Season begins at the start of the spring semester typically.  This part of the school year is dedicated to our Bands learning songs together that they will perform in contest for panels of judges.  The music we prepare is very challenging and more formal in sound.

Halloween Party
Just what it sounds like!  All 6th, 7th and 8th graders are encouraged to attend!  Admission is free.  We ask that all Band members bring one canned food item for our school's Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat Canned Food Drive.  Costumes are encouraged but not required!

Pre-UIL Contest
Pre-UIL Contest is our district's contest at CHS where each 7th and 8th grade band in our district performs three songs on stage for judges and then move the band hall where they are given 5 minutes to learn a song they've never seen and then perform that too!  Parents are encouraged to attend both performances!

School Owned Instrument
Expensive instruments that are not rented by parents from a music company.  These instruments are owned by Coppell ISD and parents pay an annual usage fee.

Sectional
Sectionals are practices including 7th and 8th grade students who all play the same instrument.  For example the Trumpets are a part of our band but at times, the Trumpets are removed from the band to practice as a Trumpet section AWAY from the large group.  Sectionals are one of the most valuable learning times for our Band.  Sectionals typically occur after school from 3:45-5:00pm but sometimes occur during the school day band class as well.

Solo Contest
Solo Contest occurs in February.  All CISD 6th, 7th and 8th grade students learn a solo, practice the solo with a professional pianist and perform for a judge for a rating.  The solo contest teaches our learners to perform in an individual setting without the support of their classmates in performance.

Summer Band Camp
Summer Band Camp is typically the week prior to the start of the school year.  All 7th and 8th grade students are required to attend.  There is no cost.  The camp includes full band rehearsals as well as sectional time with your child's instrument specialist.  Private lessons are also conducted during the camp.  The purpose of the camp is to get everyone back on campus after summer break, fellowship, learn our music for the fall pep rally and football season and prepare for the Welcome Back Concert.

UIL
UIL is short for the BIG CONTEST of the year for all 7th and 8th grade bands throughout the State of Texas.  UIL Contest is basically our Band's STAAR test!

Welcome Back Concert
The Welcome Back Concert is the Friday night of our Summer Band Camp week.  The Concert is the culmination of our work during Summer Band Camp.  All parents and family members are welcome to attend this fun year-opening concert!
